California continues to attract movers in 2025 despite rising living costs and climate concerns. Consumer Affairs lists Roseville in Placer County as the top city for its quality of life, low poverty, and unemployment rates. Visalia and Clovis in the San Joaquin Valley follow, with Visalia known for affordability and a strong economy, while Clovis offers excellent homeowner affordability and low crime rates. Elk Grove and Murrieta complete the top five. Oakland, Berkeley, Lancaster, El Monte, and Los Angeles rank among the least desirable cities to move to.

Governor Newsom’s office says any Californian can now purchase naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal medication, directly from the state at a discounted rate. The medication is available online for $24 for a two-pack of the nasal spray. CalMatters says California has spent more than $1 billion fighting the opioid epidemic, which killed nearly 9,000 people last year according to data from the state health department. More than 6 million naloxone kits have been distributed to local governments and organizations since 2018.

A 6-year-old boy was hit by a pickup truck Friday night around 6:15 p.m. while riding his bike in a north Ukiah neighborhood. The CHP says he was airlifted to a hospital following the crash. The crash was less than a mile from Ukiah High School. The Press Democrat says
the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Officers said it did not appear as though the driver had been speeding or was under the influence of drugs or alcohol and the crash remains under investigation.

Heads up. Cal Fire is conducting a prescribed burn at its Howard Forest headquarters near Willits today. The prescribed burn will last almost two weeks, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. weather permitting. The Mendocino Voice says to expect to see smoke in the area, including from the highway. Cal Fire says approximately 100 acres of land will be burned as part of the state’s fuel reduction program.

Mendocino County is hosting a healthcare education and workforce Summit this week at the Wyndham Garden Coyote Valley Hotel in Redwood Valley. It’s a collaboration of educational and health care institutions working together in order to identify challenges and create solutions to the healthcare shortage challenging the region. A similar event was held in Lake County last year and was a huge success and resulted in a new CNA program at the Lake County Office of Education and the development of a SIM lab on the campus of Sutter Lakeside hospital. . It’s sponsored by Workforce Alliance of the North Bay, Cal Poly Humboldt, Mendocino College and others. The Board of Supervisors will consider an appointment to fill a vacant seat on the Lakeport Fire Protection District Board of Directors and hear a presentation on the home hardening program by North Coast Opportunities, which aims to increase wildfire resilience in local homes. The board will also consider an advisory board appointment for the Glenbrook Cemetery District. Lake County News says they’re meeting this morning at 9‌, in the board chambers on the first floor of the Lake County Courthouse. California is considering a new law to help control how much rent can go up each year. Right now, there’s a limit of ten percent on rent increases for most renters, but that will disappear in 2030. The new plan, called the Affordable Rent Act, proposes to lower the maximum increase to five percent and would also include single-family homes. They were previously exempt from the rules.
