Congressman Jared Huffman is hosting a Town Hall this week in Ukiah. It’s taking place this Friday night at the Mendocino College campus in Ukiah. He’ll be joined by local Assemblyman Chris Rogers. The Ukiah Daily Journal says the event goes from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Center For Visual and Performing Arts and a livestream of the event “will be available on Mendocino Coast Media – Comcast Channel 3 or 64. Huffman’s office says you can expect him to give an update from D.C., share plans as Ranking Member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, talk about the new Trump Administration, and yes, he will take questions from the audience.

A new list released by the Department of Government Efficiency details several federal buildings that may be shutting down soon, including one in Mendocino County. Indian Health Services in Ukiah. It’s listed as one of two field offices for the Sacramento District’s Office of Environmental Health & Engineering and serves Indian individuals, communities, and health programs. The Press Democrat says the closures stem from President Trump and DOGE leader Elon Musk’s plans to trim federal spending.

The East Region Town Hall, or ERTH, will get updates on roads, a new park and general projects when it meets today. John Speka, senior transportation planner for the Lake Area Planning Council, is the guest speaker and he’ll address the Regional Transportation Plan and Active Transportation Plan. It
identifies needs and priority projects over the next 20 years for all modes of transportation including streets and roads, highways, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and public transit. Also on the agenda is an update on the development of John T. Klaus Park east of Clearlake Oaks. Lake County news says ERTH will also consider a letter of support for the Clearlake Oaks/Schindler Creek Initiative as well as a letter to Public Works regarding High Valley Road.
The Lake County news says the meeting is this afternoon at 4 p.m. at the Moose Lodge in Clearlake Oaks and will also be available on Zoom.

Two proposed bills to ban transgender athletes from competing in female sports have been rejected. Assembly Bill 89 would have established a ban on biological males to compete on a girls’ interscholastic sports team. Meanwhile, AB 844 would have reversed laws allowing biological males to compete in female sports starting from elementary school and up through college. Governor Gavin Newsom, who’s said that transgender athletes in female sports make it "deeply unfair" was absent from the meeting.

A Fort Bragg man has been arrested after a welfare check was requested on a woman who had possibly been assaulted. According to the Fort Bragg Police Department, it happened last Friday afternoon around 4 after officers went to the home on Ebbing Way heard a woman screaming for help and a male voice attempting to shut her up and preventing her from opening the door. After 67 year old Christopher Grewer refused to comply with police and ran upstairs, the officers eventually took him into custody. Meantime, the female victim received several injuries consistent with strangulation and physical assault, and was rushed to Adventist Mendocino Coast Hospital. The Ukiah Daily Journal says Grewer was booked into Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of attempted homicide, domestic violence and violating a court order. He’s being held in lieu of $500,000 bail.

The latest report out on California’s unemployment rate shows state numbers are relatively stable with slight improvement for Lake County. Lake County News is reporting that the unemployment rate in Lake County was 7.7% in February, which is down from 8% in January. Lake County’s February jobless rate in 2024 was 7.2%. You should know that Lake County is ranked No. 45 for its February’s unemployment rate nationally. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for Mendocino County in February was 6.2%
