Fourteen Mendocino County students are heading to Southern California next month to compete against fellow braniacs from across the state in the 74th California Science & Engineering Fair. They represent the top 10 projects chosen from the 39th annual Science & Engineering Fair and STEAM Expo at Mendocino College in Ukiah on Saturday. The Mendocino Voice says they’ll compete against hundreds of other projects from students statewide, with a chance at bringing home a trophy or two and some cash prizes. The California Science and Engineering Fair will be held at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks April 12-13. Good luck!

The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office says they arrested a Ukiah resident for burglarizing county-owned vehicles in Ukiah .
Deputies responded to a reported burglary at Mendocino County Animal Care Services, and witnessed several damaged vehicles, with several missing . items. The Mendocino Voice says a car was identified as being on the scene and id’s to the suspect as the driver of that car, 39 year old Warren Peck
Police say they found a concealed weapon on him during a routine search and recovered several stolen items that belonged to Animal Care Services.
Peck was arrested and booked into the Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of burglary, vandalism and theft with prior convictions.

The Lakeport Board of supervisors has unanimously voted to dissolve the three years Cannabis Task Force. However, a new draft ordinance will take its place next month, according to Community Development Department Director Mireya Turner. The Record Bee says the new draft ordinance will get one more review at a public hearing at the Planning Commissions’ meeting in April and finalized shortly after.

They say there’s no such thing as a free lunch, but there are free trees? PG&E, in partnership with Arbor Day Foundation, is giving 3,000 free trees to eligible customers as part of its effort to keep communities safe by planting the right tree in the right place. Dave Canny, vice president for PG&E’s North Coast region says planting trees in communities offers many long-term benefits, including cleaner air and a reduced carbon-footprint. The Mendocino Voice says eligible customers can sign up to reserve a tree at www.arborday.org/pge. Trees will be delivered to the address you list on the website, six weeks following the order date. Each household can reserve up to one tree while supplies last.

California continues to expand the electric vehicle charging network. Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the state has reached more than 178-thousand installed public and shared private electric vehicle chargers statewide. According to Newsom’s office, California now has 48-percent more electric vehicle chargers than gasoline nozzles in the state. Newsom put out a statement saying California is embracing its clean car future and offering consumers more choices.

The Clearlake Police Department is asking for your help in locating two individuals. The first is 15 year old George Guardino.
He’s a white male, approximately 6 feet tall and 150 pounds, with red or brown buzz cut hair, brown eyes, and possibly wearing a white tank top and black checkered pajama bottoms. The second person is 43-year-old Matthew Vicchione. He’s described as a white male, 5 feet 9 inches tall and 160 pounds. He is bald with brown eyes. Vicchione was last seen wearing a black jacket, blue jeans and tan boots. Lake County News says he was last seen near College Access Road and Dam Road Extension. If you have any information regarding either of these two individuals, please call the Clearlake Police Department.

Spring showers bring May flowers, and also flowers in March. More wildflowers are just beginning to pop up at Low Gap Regional Park in Ukiah.
Some of the flowers blooming right now include the California Fawn Lily, the Western Buttercup and California poppies. Plus, 40 other species. The Ukiah Daily Journal says the Wildflower Walk, hosted by the Sanhedrin Chapter of the California Native Plant Society, happens tomorrow morning, so long as it doesn’t rain. You’re asked to meet at the tables near the tennis courts at 10 and advised to wear good hiking shoes and dress for the weather.
