Mendocino College is buying some property in Downtown Ukiah for future student housing. The school says they have purchased the building from Redwood at Perkins and Main Streets, from Redwood Credit Union, as part of what they call phase one of student housing expansion. The Mendocino College Foundation supported the acquisition and says the project will increase affordable housing for students and also help the Ukiah Economy. Officials say they’ll work with the city to address concerns about high density housing downtown and will be transparent with the process. Construction is a few years away as Mendocino College looks for more donors to pay for the project

The beach will be a dangerous place this weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a beach hazard statement through Sunday morning for Mendocino County and points north. Forecasters predict large, unexpected waves can sweep across the beach without warning, sweeping people into the sea from rocks, jetties, and beaches. These sneaker waves can also move large objects such as logs, crushing anyone caught underneath. The sea may look calm, but the large breakers can pop up without warning so the advice is to stay back from the water and never turn your back on the ocean.

The US Army Corps of Engineers is concerned about recent vandalism near Lake Mendocino. They report a cut lock and gate damage at the Bushay Campground, damage and theft of pipes at the Kyen Campground bathrooms, and increased illegal dumping. The Corps says unless the situation improves, they’ll be forced to close recreation areas and lock bathrooms to protect against further damage. If you see anything suspicious, officials ask that you get in touch with the rangers or other staff to report it.

A building that was once a popular restaurant in Lakeport is no more. Lake County News reports that the building that housed Perko’s Cafe on 11th street is being demolished, with work continuing into next week. The city says the future of the site in the Willow Tree Plaza Shopping Center is unknown. The building has been vacant for years and was becoming a target for crime and vandalism.
