A developing story this afternoon–reports of TWO significant earthquakes affecting the coast late this morning leading to a TSUNAMI warning. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 7.0 earthquake hit at 10:44 a.m. offshore. ¼ mile deep That puts it around 65 miles off the coast of Humboldt COunty–around 100 miles northwest of Fort Bragg. Three minutes later, at 10:47 a.m., a 5.8-magnitude quake struck near Cobb. The offshore quake prompted the National Weather Service to put out a Tsunami warning for a long stretch of the California coast from Davenport in Santa Cruz County to the Oregon Line. The warning says people near the coast should be ready to evacuate at any time.follow and orders needed..and to stay away from the coast.State Sen. Mike McGuire said in a social media post that there was a mandatory evacuation order in Crescent City up the coast in Del Norte County due to the tsunami threat. The warning is expected to last past noon. As for land impacts, there have been several reports of strong shaking in the Brooktrails, Ukiah, Laytonville, and as far inland as Lakeport. Reports mentioned this was a strong shake as people had not felt for a long time–0 or 50 years–another person said they were in Southern California in Loma Prieta in the quake in 1989 and that today’s movement was comparable. Some people who felt it reported on Facebook that their houses swayed, and others say trees in Ukiah were moving back and forth–one report even says the ornaments on the Christmas tree were rattled for about 30 seconds when the quake rumbled though No reports yet of any damage. The US GS says there is the possibility of AFTERSHOCKS as well. According to scanner traffic, law enforcement officers are positioning in areas that could be affected by any high waves.
