The Highlands Senior Center in Clearlake is back at its original location. The center had been in a temporary space at the Clearlake Masonic Lodge, but now, renovations at its office on Bowers Avenue are done and it’s back to business there. They have a new kitchen and more storage space to put donations and buy bulk items at a discount to serve the senior population. The work isn’t done yet either. Next year, they’ll put in new landscaping and get a coat of fresh paint. The center provides activities and programs offering support for older folks in the Clearlake area.

Next up, fires in the Upper Lake and Covelo Ranger Districts. Fire managers say safety is the priority and that they will only start fires at specific times and when factors like wind, humidity, and air quality are favorable. Thanksgiving is just a couple of weeks away now and you might be thinking of frying your turkey this year. If you’re a newbie or a vet around the deep fryer, fire departments are reminding you that it’s safety-first, or else you could be dealing with more than a ruined main course and hungry guests. The number one tip–fry away from structures, never fry in a garage, on a back porch, or near anything flammable outside. They also say it’s common sense, but you should never overfill the pot with oil and always keep an eye on the sizzling bird, with a way to put out any accidental fire.
