Among major races in the state, Congressman Adam Schiff beat former baseball player Steve Garvey for US Senate, while area Congressman Mike Thompson and Jared Huffmaan easily won re-election.
In statewide ballot questions, voters approved Prop 36, which increases penalties for theft and other crimes, while Prop 32 to raise the state minimum wage is too close to call.
