Lake County Water Resources is watching carefully after a kind of invasive mussel has been found in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, which is part of the watershed that includes Clear Lake. Golden mussels have shown up in Stockton Harbor in the Central Valley. The species non-native and invasive, and biologists say it is a threat to all California freshwater infrastructure, and quality. Unless it is contained, the fear is the mussels are likely to quickly spread far and wide… Lake County Water Resources invasive mussel coordinator Angela DePalma-Dow tells Lake County News that they’re still gathering information but from what they know now there is a risk of a significant impact on Clear Lake. However, DePalma-Dow says a robust prevention program works in Lake County’s favor trying to keep unwanted species out. She’s encouraging boaters to get a free boat screening and participate in the county’s mussel sticker program. The Golden mussel is native to Asia and probably got stateside by hitching a ride as a barnacle on a trans-Pacific cargo ship.

The Army Corps of Engineers has closed the North Boat Ramp at Lake Mendocino because of receding water levels. The South Ramp is still open, for now.

The Mendocino Transit Authority will offer a free lift to the polls on all routes on election day. Dial-a-Ride in Fort Bragg and Ukiah will also be free for trips to and from voting sites, but you’ll need to call ahead for an appointment. In a news release, the MTA says transportation can be a barrier to voting and that waiving fares is one way to make getting there easier for folks without regular transportation. You can visit the MTA website to find the bus route that brings you closest to where you go to vote on Tuesday. If you’re not sure of your polling place, you can check with the Registrar of Voters office.

Don’t forget to turn the clocks back before you go to bed Saturday. It’s time again for the twice-yearly clock change ritual. We "fall back" to Pacific Standard Time at 2:00 AM Sunday. We go the other way and LOSE an hour when Saving Time starts March 9th. Moves in congress to standardize the time for good, one way or the other, have gone nowhere–probably by lobbyists for big clock and watch.
