Lakeport Police say they are concerned about an increase in drivers passing stopped school buses. In a social media post, police say they are seeing an uptick in violations of the law that requires all vehicles to stop in both directions when a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. They say the lights may feel to you like they are flashing for a long time but it’s to ensure every child has crossed the street safely or to allow students to get off or onto the bus without rushing to sit down. The fine for violators is $695 or more plus a point on your license which could hike your insurance.

The California Wolf Project is underway in a partnership between UC Berkeley and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife along with the National Geographic Society to work on long term management of the gray wolf population nearly 100 years after they were almost rendered extinct. Officials say it will use Berkeley’s experts in ecology, sociology, economics and environmental policy and their relationships with nonprofits, landowners and tribes. The team will be looking at how wolves migrate and colonize, predator-prey dynamics, and conflicts with rural communities and livestock producers. Gray wolves are classified as endangered both under the California Endangered Species Act and the federal Endangered Species Act. They were systematically destroyed and removed from California in the 1920’s and began recolonizing in 2011.
