The Lakeport Police chief is asking the city council for money to upgrade the department’s body cameras. Chief Dale Strobe wants the OK to sign a 5-year deal with the vendor for $100,000 to cover the cost of the cameras. The first year will cost around $30,000. Also at tomorrow’s meeting of the city council, the chief will ask for support for a ballot measure you’ll decide on next month. Proposition 36 would increase sentences for property crimes and drug trafficking and require treatment for other drug felonies The chief says it would not only punish offenders but would reduce crime too by treating substance abuse which can often lead to criminal behavior. The City-County Meeting starts at 5:30 at city hall. You can find the full agenda on the city website.

If you look west just after sunset, you might be able to see something you’ll never see again in our lifetimes. The Comet C2023 A 3 will be in view across Northern California for just the next week or so but after that, it will vanish into deep space for centuries until it flies by Earth again. Best places to watch–look for an open view of the west to the southwest where you can see the horizon because the comet will be low in the sky–16 degrees if you are into astronomy.

Add Ontario, California to the list of places you can go non-stop through the closest airport with passenger service. Avelo Airlines’ first trip from Charles Schultz Airport Santa Rosa airport to Ontario – just outside LA – took off last week, Avelo will inaugurate service from Sonoma County to Salt Lake City starting next week. That makes eight smaller West Coast destinations. Three of them are seasonal.
