If you go camping or have a handheld blowtorch you’ve probably used those familiar green or blue single-use propane cylinders– brand names like Coleman and Bernz-o-Matic.. Not much longer. Governor Newsom has signed a bill phasing them out from stores by 2028. The cylinders may be easy to use but they’re hard to get rid of, especially for national parks, with expensive and possibly dangerous disposal of those left behind in camp trash. There are alternative refillable cylinders but they are quite a bit more expensive. Single-use manufacturers say there isn’t yet enough incentive or infrastructure for refillables and they worry that customers could turn to imported, unregulated foreign fuel canisters instead. Bigger refillable tanks, like what you’d use for the grill aren’t affected..
