Organizers call last weekend’s California Coastal Cleanup a success–with tons of debris pulled from the shore and down the coast. Most of it was the usual trash–bits and pieces of plastic – day-to-day stuff people mindlessly throw away that ends up fouling the water and shoreline. That wasn’t all of it though. Volunteers report car batteries, tires, hubcaps and used oil filters, pairs of shoes, keys, wallets, electronics, and down the coast in Sonoma County, a cashier’s check for $68,000

The state is hoping to get more public involvement on climate change. Governor Newsom has announced an initiative called California’s Climate Action Counts, which he hopes will spur a million people to volunteer. He’d like to see more people pledge to act on climate change through things like recycling, composting, supporting local agriculture, and planting more trees and community gardens. The governor says simple steps by more people will add up to change leading to a healthier planet.
