The Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians in Lake County is getting strong opposition to its plans for a new casino in Solano County. Plans call for a 700 million dollar casino in Vallejo, near I-80. A group of other tribes and elected officials are slamming the plan, saying there hasn’t been enough environmental review of the project, that the 128-acre site was intended for open space, and that it has cultural significance for Native Americans in that area. They want the Bureau of Indian Affairs to reject the proposal. Among those with concerns are area members of Congress John Garamenid and Mike Thompson. As well as Governor Gavin Newsom. The Scotts Valley Band defends the proposal, saying it’s not just a business venture, but a way for members to gain self-sufficiency and preserve its cultural heritage.
