The dangerous heat continues with new records possible today and tomorrow in Ukah. The heat will ease somewhat on the weekend, but highs will still be much above normal, in the mid to upper 90s. The troubling part of the forecast is for dry lightning, caused when the super-hot air evaporates falling moisture, causing updrafts and lightning with none of the rain that usually falls during thunderstorms. Cal Fire officials say lightning in the forecast is one of the scenarios that keep them up at night.
CalFire says the 98-acre Mina Fire northwest of Covelo is now 60 percent contained. The latest report says it continues to threaten structures and private timber lands, with evacuation warnings still in place.
Other active fires include the Point Fire in Southern Humboldt County. Forward progress has been stopped with 10 percent containment of 80 acres near Garberville with Evacuation orders in place. The Royal FIre near Lake Tahoe is still blazing over 215 acres and just 30 percent containment since it started earlier this week. Talk about fire and ice—just a little over 4 months ago, the same ground burning there today was buried with up to 9 feet of snow from the blizzard of ‘24
Mendocino County Public Health is warning about a mosquito-borne virus that can make you sick. Cases of Dengue fever have been rising this summer across the country. Although the specific bug that carries it isn’t native to California, several counties have reported infestations. Dengue cannot be transmitted from person to person. You need what they call a vector–for Dengue, it’s an infected mosquito. Public Health says the symptoms can range from none, to severe. The worst cases can be life-threatening, with indicators like a low platelet count, fever, headache, muscle aches, and rashes. The best prevention is to use a good, EPA-approved repellent and cover exposed skin when you can, especially in the early morning and late afternoon when mosquitoes are most active
A woman has been arrested and charged with scrawling graffiti on the windows of the City Building on Seminary Avenue Ukiah last month. After looking at the surveillance video and finding other evidence. Ukiah police have charged Maryia Siddons of Ukiah with vandalism. Police say it cost around $600 to clean up.
