You’ll need to be heat-aware this fourth of July. Temperatures will soar between now and the weekend and there is an extreme heat advisory in effect through Saturday in Mendocino County. County websites have information about cooling centers to help folks who don’t have a place to stay out of the brutal heat.

Lake County is prepping for the heat. Among the places to go if you need to chill, the Lake County Library System and county-operated peer support centers are all open during normal business hours. Non-governmental organizations may also make their facilities available to the public. The County Website will have the latest as the heat wave builds.

No penalty fees for fire departments in Hopland and Fort Bragg after they put up firefighting training towners without a permit. The Board of Supervisors waived those penalties after hearing from the fire chiefs who said the towers are vital to crews learning to fight fire under real-world conditions. The chiefs say they should have known to get the permits but that it was an honest mistake. The board waived the more than $8,000 worth of penalties but told the departments they’ll need to work with the code enforcement department to get the permissions needed for the towers

Lakeport Police Department is one of more than 100 law enforcement agencies that will have a 25 million dollar state grant to fight impaired driving. CHP says the money will make roadways safer for all Californians through education, increased enforcement, and research. The funding is available through the tax on cannabis and cannabis products sold in the state.
