Crews spent the day mopping up at a large fire in Ukiah. The fire broke out at the C and S Waste Solutions warehouse on Taylor Drive around 4:00 this morning and took several hours to fully contain. It was so large it could be seen for miles and was visible on fire cameras. The cause remains under investigation.

It’s been a day in the dark for 153 PG&E customers in areas east of Lower Lake and southeast of Boggs Mountain in Lake County. About 12,000 customers in 9 other counties are out as part of a planned public safety outage. None of the outages are planned for Mendocino County.

The risk for fires is high, with hot and dry weather expected to blanket the region. CalFIre is on alert and ready to respond to any outbreaks.

The hot weather can be deadly, so officials in both Mendocino and Lake Counties say it’s important to lower your risk by staying inside if you can and staying hydrated. There are cooling stations set up to help. You can find them on the county’s web pages.

Groundbreaking for the new Lake County Courthouse project is planned for tomorrow. Officials will gather at the site on Lakeport Boulevard at 10 am to turn over the ceremonial first shovels. The project will cost 83.3 million dollars and is funded by a state initiative to address critical court infrastructure needs. The new courthouse should open in early 2026.

The Lake County Library is celebrating a birthday this month. It was 50 years ago, in 1974, that residents voted to approve spending part of their property taxes on a library, something that had been in the works since the early 20th century. Lake County was the last in the state to have a unified library system, which today has branches in Middletown, Clearlake, and Upper Lake in addition to the main library in Lakeport and a bookmobile. County librarian Christopher Veach says what he loves most is that it all started because people got together and decided they wanted a library. To celebrate the golden anniversary, the library is giving people a chance to share their library memories on our website or at any branch on our memory display. Photos, pictures, and written statements will be showcased, both online and at library branch libraries. Various events are in the works all year to celebrate the milestone.
