A judge is ordering University of California workers to pause their strike. Graduate students have been on the picket lines in response to a crackdown on protests against the Middle East war in Gaza. UC officials sued the union, arguing the strike would disrupt classes and research as they get closer to finals.
Another hot week lies ahead for the area. The National Weather Service is calling for highs between 95 and more than 100 degrees in parts of the Sacramento Valley, with tomorrow expected to be the hottest day of the week. This round of extreme heat is expected to last through Wednesday. Officials in southern Lake County said they’re expecting triple digit highs Tuesday and Wednesday.
Governor Gavin Newsom is confirming he and Democratic leaders in the state are trying to negotiate a measure to reform Proposition 47 off the November ballot. Prop 47 has become notorious for loosening the penalties around drug and theft crimes. El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson says the reform measure would get those struggling with drug addiction into treatment and reduce the homeless population. Meanwhile, the bipartisan reform initiative known as the Homelessness, Drug Addiction, and Theft Reduction Act is likely heading to the ballot.
A man was killed, and several others were stabbed during a large fight at Lake Berryessa on Saturday. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office reports the fight began around 5:30 p.m. at the Oak Shores Day Use area. Two stabbing victims were airlifted to hospitals. The shooting victim, who is identified as Fabian Sandoval Garcia, died at the scene. Police say after the fight broke out, a man got a gun from his car and shot Garcia. He fled but was arrested a short time later and is hospitalized with stab wounds. What started the fight is still being investigated.
Fort Bragg City Council meets today at Town Hall on North Main Street. The meeting is scheduled for 6pm and will also be available on Zoom. Agenda items include an update on the Bainbridge Park Playground Replacement Project and a review of the Map for a minor subdivision. A man was killed in a weekend ATV crash. The CHP says the crash happened on Bartlett Springs Road in Lucerne on Saturday evening. First responders said a man from Sacramento was riding an ATV with his teenage son when the ATV went off the road, and they were both ejected. The teen had minor injuries and was able to flag down a passing vehicle for help. His father was pronounced dead at the scene just after 9pm, and the teen was airlifted to an area hospital. CHP Seargent Joel Skeen said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, the investigation is ongoing.
Lake County Board of Supervisors will meet this week. The meeting is scheduled for tomorrow at 9am at the Lake County Courthouse on North Forbes Street. A Lake County man has been chosen to head up a Veteran’s Home by the Governor. Jeremy Kirk of Hidden Valley will be the new deputy Administrator at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville, according to a press release from Governor Newsom’s office. Kirk held a previous role as a direct construction supervisor for the California Department of Veterans Affairs. The Governor’s office said Kirk’s new role did not require Senate confirmation, and his compensation package includes a salary of just over $147,000.
