The Mendocino Land Trust and The Conservation fund announced this week that the TCF has conveyed two conservation easements along the Big River and Salmon Creek in Mendocino County to MLT. The easements total just over 16-thousand acres. According to a press release, Forest Management Plans have been updated to accommodate both forests. The Mendocino Land Trust will be responsible for any activity on the easements.

Someone stole an American Flag after a Memorial Day ceremony in Willits. The flag was raised last weekend during the ceremony at 90 South Main Street, according to Mendo Fever dot com. The flag was reported missing early Tuesday morning. The Willits Police Department is asking anyone with information to come forward.

Governor Gavin Newsom discussed this week how artificial intelligence can best serve the people of California. Newsom took part in Wednesday’s discussions during the Joint California Summit on Generative AI which focuses on how the state can best use transformative technology and it’s impacts on the state’s workforce. He touted California’s role as the world’s artificial intelligence leader and highlighted the state’s commitment to innovation. Newsom adds California needs to proceed with caution because AI can either help or hurt the state and its residents. 

A proposed California policy that would have required schools to inform parents if their child wants to change their gender identity did not get enough signatures to be on the November election ballot. Proponents of the measure said it would provide important transparency for parents. However, those against the measure argued that it could endanger the safety of children living with families who do not accept changes in gender identity. Some California school districts have faced legal challenges over similar parental notification policies in recent months. Proponents had to submit over half a million signatures of registered voters by Tuesday for the measure to qualify.

A fire that was burning west of Hopland has been contained. The vegetation was burning Wednesday afternoon and was getting close to area structures. According to the Incident Commander from Hopland Fire, firefighters were able to get the fire to stop moving forward just before 6:30 last night. Officials said the Eagle Fire had burned a total of 1.67 acres as of 8pm.

More than 700-thousand airbags need to be replaced in California. That’s according to recent data released by CARFAX, which tallied the number of vehicles across the U.S. that have yet to replace Takata airbags. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration previously ordered Takata airbags to be recalled in all vehicles. According to the government agency, 27 deaths and at least 400 injuries were linked to the airbags. CARFAX data showed Texas has the highest number of unfixed Takata airbags, followed by California with 739-thousand.

People across the state are getting the chance to take home a dog or cat for free. California kicks off its first Adopt-a-Pet Day on Saturday. Shelters are overrun with animals abandoned, abused, or surrendered. Organizers say they all deserve a loving family and hope that will happen by increasing demand. The event includes 150 sites where people can go to meet their new furry friends. The goal is to adopt two-thousand-24 pets.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has identified the woman who was killed when she was reportedly hit by a vehicle on Highway 53. The crash happened just before 2 Sunday morning north of Anderson Ranch Parkway near Clearlake. Martha Martinez was found lying in the northbound lane of Highway 53. CHP said evidence showed Martinez was hit by someone going north in the Number 2 lane. Whoever hit her fled the scene. Authorities continue to look for the suspect, anyone with information is asked to call the Clear Lake office of the California Highway Patrol.
