Police and the Middletown Unified School District are investigating vandalism at Middletown High that followed the annual unsanctioned student prank, but nobody is laughing. They say a small group of students destroyed two memorial trees on the campus early Monday morning, a few hours after an earlier apparent prank on school grounds which caused no damage. According to the school, police are investigating but there are no suspects or leads. However, the school vows that those who did the damage will be caught and held accountable. The district says it is working with the family who planted one of the trees in 2018 the tree in memory of Jeni Hall who was a Middletown Memorial student who died of cystic fibrosis in 1984 when she was 12 years old.
The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors has approved the annual assessment for communities in the Sherwood Corridor. That means residents in Brooktrails, Sylvandale, Spring Creek, and Gates will vote on funding for two emergency access routes in the district. All property owners in the benefit district boundary will receive an official ballot by mail by June 7, 2024. Ballots must be returned by July 23rd . In the existing Sherwood Road corridor, a single road serves a large population in a high-risk fire area, posing significant safety risks during wildfires. These routes are essential during an emergency,as dedicated access roads for first responders or alternative evacuation routes for residents. There will be a public presentation on May 28, 7:00 pm during the Brooktrails Township Community Services District’s Board of Directors meeting. If voters approve, the earliest that the special assessment will appear in the tax roll is the fiscal year 2024-25.
The state senate will take up a package of bills that backers say will address the issue of missing Missing and Murdered Indigenous People. One measure passed by the House would beef up procedures used by state police when putting out what’s called a feather alert when a Native American is reported missing. Other proposals would require prompt action when a tribal child is reported missing from foster care, while a third would set up a pilot program to give peace officer status to qualified tribal officers. Blue Lake Rancheria, Coyote Valley Band of Pomo Indians, and the Yurok Tribes would all take part. California has one of the highest rates of unsolved cases of missing and murdered indigenous people in the US.
A home site Healdsburg is on the market for almost 2 million dollars. That’s not unusual, but the property listing is. A picture on the real estate website Zillow shows all that’s there is a pool. The house attached was destroyed in the Kincaid fire in 2019 but the pool survived the flames. The owners decided not to rebuild. The five-acre lot comes with building and other permits ready for the new owners to put up a house–that won’t require a new pool.
