Governor Gavin Newsom has not yet delivered his State of the State address. After laying out his revised state spending plan Friday, the governor dodged a question on why he hasn’t done so. After he proposed cutting programs and initiatives and tapping into reserves to eliminate California’s multi-billion dollar shortfall, he joked that he felt like we just finished it. He said he’s going to look at things differently so as to tackle the problem of a 27-point-six billion dollar budget deficit.
Governor Gavin Newsom is updating voters about implementing Proposition 1. Speaking at CalChamber’s Capitol Summit in Sacramento, Newsom said 68 thousand people have been taken off the streets, but businesses say they don’t see or feel it. The Governor said progress is being made while cities and counties are being held accountable for complying with the changes laid out in Proposition 1. The ballot measure that barely passed in the March election repurposes billions of dollars to increase the number of psychiatric beds in California, build and provide affordable housing, and fund various services for people living on the streets.
Governor Gavin Newsom is laying out his revised budget for the state legislature to consider. Newsom says he’s going to look at things differently so as to tackle the problem of a 27-point-six billion dollar budget deficit. Newsom proposes cutting programs and initiatives and drawing funds into reserves, which he says is the responsible way to eliminate the deficit and achieve a surplus in the first fiscal year. He explained that the state’s capital gain from the progressive tax system diminished returns considerably in 2022 and 23, so now he says the state has to live within its means. Newsom says the state will save three-point-four billion dollars after closing four prisons, and he says more cost-saving closures are coming.
