Pro-Palestinian protesters at Sacramento State University are celebrating a victory. After more than a week of camping out on university grounds, student activists say Sac State is agreeing to update its policies. The policy change also notes that Sac State does not currently have any direct investments in Israel and has no plans to make future investments. The activist group “Students for Justice in Palestine” also took to social media to announce their demands have been met. In a statement, Sac State officials said they’re pleased to have reached a resolution.
Thousands of DACA recipients will soon have access to affordable healthcare. Under a new federal rule, roughly 100-thousand beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program will be able to enroll in a qualified health plan through the Affordable Care Act insurance marketplace. The rule takes effect on November 1st. In the Golden State, DACA recipients will be able to enroll in a healthcare plan through Covered California.
California Congresswoman Barbara Lee is endorsing Congressman Adam Schiff, who’s running for the U.S. Senate this fall. Schiff says he’s grateful for her support in this race. Schiff and former LA Dodgers star Republican Steve Garvey will face off in November for the late Dianne Feinstein’s Senate seat.
Thanks to a wet 2023, California’s groundwater supplies are at historic levels. Steven Springhorn with the California Department of Water Resources says we’re still not out of the woods when it comes to the impact of our recent drought years. Springhorn says we need a few more years of heavy rain to recover from decades of drought. He adds that the state, counties, and cities are getting much better at collecting and storing water, and ongoing projects are underway to improve that efficiency going forward.
Ukiah area vets are invited to the VFW this weekend for their monthly breakfast. Food will be served from 8am to noon on Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Hall on Seminary Avenue in Ukiah. Breakfast will be provided by Redwood Empire Lions Club volunteers. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1900 is holding these breakfasts quarterly in May, August, November, and February. Breakfast is 10 dollars with proceeds benefiting the many projects supported by the VFW.
A Willits man was arrested for illegally possessing a firearm. Police approached Terry Richmond just before midnight on Monday as he sat in his car. When officers searched Richmond’s vehicle they found a loaded gun. Richmond has prior convictions, so he’s not allowed to have a firearm under California law. He was arrested and booked into the Mendocino County Jail on several charges including prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
Drones were deployed to find a suspect in a shooting between neighbors. Police responded to a report of shots fired west of Redwood Valley on Wednesday after two neighbors reportedly had a confrontation. Officers reported someone called 911 just after 3pm to report a man had ridden a dirt bike onto his property and fired a gun at him. Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office was called in to fly a drone in an effort to locate the suspect. They reportedly got a visual of the dirt bike in question and the house associated with its owner. There were no reports of an arrest, and no one was injured. The incident remains under investigation.
