April is Alcohol Awareness month and the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, also known as ABC, is highlighting a statewide program that assists licensees remain in compliance and reduces alcohol-related crime. A lot of local communities have worked with ABC to conduct business inspections, designed to improve the relationship between law enforcement and merchants. From July of last year to March of this year, ABC and local law enforcement agencies conducted over 1000 inspections. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from ABC through the department’s Alcohol Policing Partnership program.
The Ukiah Police Department arrested two teenagers last week following fights at Ukiah High School. When UPD got reports of a fight in the parking lot at the school they responded and found no knife as was first reported. The school administrators thought they could handle the situation but the Police Department quickly discovered the altercation was severe. Two fighting were from the school but a third was not. Another suspect brandished a knife from his pocket and confronted one of the students with it. When campus officials checked the area for weapons they found a black satchel hidden in a trashcan and in the satchel was a loaded .40 caliber handgun and crystal meth. The UPD reported three more fights in the next two days.
