We told you a couple of days ago that there was a bi-partisan bill in the Senate that would have made camping within 500 feet of a school, open space or major transit stop a misdemeanor or infraction. The bill would also have banned camping on public sidewalks if there were beds available in local homeless shelters. And even though it was drafted by a Republican and a Democrat, Senate Democrats voted it down. This for a second year in a row. All across our state there is a proliferation of homeless camps and while legislators don’t want to penalize residents who are going through hard times, this bill was designed to assist in cleaning up city streets. Some opposed the bill because there was no funding to provide accommodations for those who were forced to leave their street homes.
