We live in a world of apps and now, California has a couple of new free apps that are designed for mental health for teens, young adults, children and parents. They are part of our state’s CalHOPE program and they are funded from the Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative. The apps are listed as Soluna and BrightLife Kids. They’re designed to address the mental health needs of families. BrightLife Kids is intended for children under 12 years old and their parents or caregivers. Soluna is an anonymous app intended for minors and young adults between the ages of 13 and 25. The program has already been tested in San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties and as just recently become available statewide.

We have such beautiful drives in this part of our state but often times there are eyesores that mar that beauty. Namely, abandoned billboards. At their meeting today, the Ukiah City Council will discuss sending a letter to Mendocino County to take action on those abandoned billboards as well as some of the under-regulated billboards in the Ukiah valley. It has been noted that the signs are in county jurisdiction and therefore the city has no jurisdiction to regulate the signage. Make your thoughts known as that meeting begins tonight at 6 at the Ukiah Civic Center as well as on Zoom.

The Mendocino County Department of Planning and Building Services has been able to secure funds from the California Coastal Commission to be used for a comprehensive coastal groundwater study. The county needs this study because they had reports of around 40 wells reported as being dry during the 2021 and 22 droughts. The need to improve groundwater conditions along the Mendocino coast is because of the crucial nature of the need for groundwater, especially since the last groundwater assessment for coastal Mendocino County took place in 1982. Volunteers are needed for the project as well. For more info, contact mendocinocounty.gov.

31-year-old Trent Cooper, formerly of Ukiah, was found dead just a couple of days after a police standoff and a shooting incident with law enforcement in Henderson, Nevada. The City of Henderson Police Department and their Criminal Apprehension Team attempted to capture Cooper, who was wanted in a violent felony case. He barricaded himself in a house and refused to surrender. Negotiations continued for several hours until the police found Cooper deceased in the home. In November of 2018, Cooper was arrested by the Ukiah Police Department after officers investigating a possible marijuana grow reportedly found evidence of a honey oil lab operating at the suspect’s home on West Mill Street.
