At today’s Lakeport City Council meeting, consideration was given to passing a resolution for the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing. It’s all being proposed to make it possible for everyone to have a chance to find some fair housing in Lakeport. Let’s say the resolution passes. That means Lakeport will continue to be diligent in fixing any unfair housing accesses. All done to make Lakeport’s living areas more balanced and well-mixed. In addition, the Council will be considering approving the plans for the South Main Street Sidewalk Project. It’s located at several locations on South Main St. from D Street to just south of Konocti Ave. The proposal will be to remove tree stumps, work on embankments, repairing concrete curbs, gutters, sidewalks and the installation of ADA compliant curb ramps.
The Lake County Land Trust has big plans for Rodman Preserve. Those plans include tending the California Bunch Grass at the Preserve. It helps to know how to identify the different grasses which then means you can help them survive and thrive. So if you would like to meet like-minded people and learn more about the native grasses at the Preserve, put May 4th and June 8th on your calendar. Officially, the event is called “Land Tending Days” and will just go for a couple of hours each of those days. When done for the day, all participants will be treated to a lunch provided by the LCLT on the back porch of the Nature Center. You do need to RSVP for one or both of the days. Contact the Preserve for more information.
The Mendocino Agriculture Department has been hosting a big Spring plant sale for over 45 years now and it’s almost time again. It’s known as the biggest plant sale in town and the flowers, trees, perennials and vegetables are fantastic this year. The big sale is set for 9am to 5pm on April 26th and then from 9-3 on the 27th. It’s a great chance to make the area brighter and better by using flowers, plants and trees. Organizers are expected a huge crowd again this year and student enrollment is up. Proceeds from the plant sale help to fund the Mendocino college Agriculture program.
The California Senate voted on a bill that would make it a criminal offense to sleep or camp on a street or sidewalk within 500 feet of a school, park or a major transit stop. That bill, co-authored by a Republican and a Democrat, was voted down in a hearing in the Senate Public Safety Committee. The bill would make creating such an encampment a misdemeanor or infraction offense. Many testified that the decisions on such an offense should be left to the individual cities.
