The Clearlake City Council is looking for better communication with the Lake County Sanitation District because of issues with a new development on Old Highway 53. Lake Co news.com reports city manager Alan Flora told the council at a recent meeting that while the 102-unit low-income development at Konocti Gardens will be ready for tenants in June, the county won’t certify it for occupancy until its wastewater system is upgraded. Flora says the city didn’t know that wastewater capacity was an issue until February even though the county had assured the city everything was fine. He says he’d like to see more interaction with the Sanitation district which members voted to pursue. Meanwhile, talks continue to try to resolve the Konocti Garden’s issue.

Mendocino County will study groundwater conditions along the coast after several wells ran dry during droughts in 2021 and 2022. The County says the California Coastal Commission will pay for the study to understand the hydrology of coastal groundwater and find out why the 40 wells dried up. Their work will also result in online maps and an assessment of how climate change might affect the groundwater supply. Consulting engineers will do the study over the next year. It will require volunteers who will be trained to measure groundwater levels as part of its research. You can find out more about the project through the county department of planning and building services.

Lawmakers in Sacramento are taking up a bill to strengthen California’s Feather Alert system. It’s supposed to alert people when a native American is missing or endangered. It’s been around for a couple of years but only activated twice. The bill up for discussion would make issuing the alert easier for police and local authorities and would require a report whenever an alert is requested but denied by CHP. Tribal Leaders say it is important to expand the Feather Alert system to deal with the number of missing indigenous people. Ana those who are in harm’s way
