California is on the verge of extending the deadline to apply for college financial aid.  Lawmakers passed a bill yesterday and sent it to Governor Newsom’s desk.  If he signs it, students will get an extra month to qualify for programs such as Cal Grant.  Many have reported problems this year since the new system for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as FAFSA, was rolled out three months late.

More details are being released in the story of a man who is accused of killing his girlfriend in front of their 2 year old. Brandy Mathieson, of Covelo, was shot and killed on Wednesday after Johnathan Draughan showed up at her home on Mendocino Pass Road with a gun. According to a news release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, the couple argued, and Mathieson called 911. During her call, dispatchers heard gunshots and she stopped talking. When officers arrived from Willits, they pronounced Mathieson dead at the scene. Draughan was arrested on suspicion of homicide and is being held in the Mendocino County Jail in Ukiah. Their toddler was taken to the hospital to be seen for unrelated injuries. Mendocino County Family and Children’s Services are now reportedly involved in the child’s care. Court records showed Mathieson had filed for a domestic violence restraining order, but it had yet to be successfully served.
