If you get your mail in Leggett you’ll need to travel to Garberville to pick it up. The Postal Service is moving its Legget operation to the Garberville office on Sprowl Creek Road. That’s because there IS no more Post Office in Legett after Friday’s fire destroyed the building. The fire started with a lightning strike on a tree, which fell and sparked the fire that eventually consumed the building. The Postal Service has issued a statement:
LEGGETT, CA- Due to extensive fire damage sustained at the Leggett Post Office, services normally provided at the Leggett Post Office will be made available until further notice at the Garberville Post Office located at 368 Sprowl Creek Rd, Garberville, CA 95542.
Starting Monday, March 4, Leggett customers are directed to pick-up their mail at the Garberville Post Office Monday- Friday 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Customers are asked to please present photo ID for mail pick-up.
Many retail services including temporary forwards, stamps, mail holds and more are also available anytime, online at USPS.com.
We thank our Leggett community in advance for their patience as we work to provide continued service.
The worst of the weekend storm is over–here and in the mountains. We got off easy compared to places like Lake Tahoe. The latest numbers show massive snowfall, including more than 7 feet at some ski areas. People spent today digging out. Some residents were trapped in their homes until they shoveled away the snow piles that covered their whole doorways. There is good news. The state reports the snowpack in the Sierra Mountains is now almost DOUBLE the normal level. That means there should be LOTS of water flowing in the spring that will flow from our taps this summer.
The Lakeport City Council will decide on upping the offer to hire a new police chief. Administrative Services Director Kelly Buendia wants the council to approve adding a $ 1,000-a-month housing allowance in the job offer to potential job candidates. The extra money would help find qualified candidates concerned about the tight housing market. The city is looking for a replacement for Chief Brad Rasmussen who is retiring by the end of the year That request is on the agenda for Tuesday’s city council meeting. Also on the agenda, public Works Director Ronn Ladd will brief the council on current and upcoming road work. The meeting starts at 6 PM Tomorrow at City Hall. You can attend virtually. The info is on the city website
Also tomorrow, the Lake County Board of Supervisors will get an update on the threatened Clear Lake Hitch. Representatives of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife will be there to talk about a recent meeting that focused on the latest about the small fish, whose population has seen a significant decline in the past few years. The meeting starts at 9 AM at the Council Chambers. The Hitch discussion is part of the afternoon session as 1 PM.
Tomorrow is the California Primary. There are a lot of races to decide. There are more than 20 Candidates on the line Presidential primary–some that you recognize and some you likely haven’t heard of, like President Boddie–yes that is his legal name — on the ballot. There is also the US Senate primary with even more choices–more than 30. The top two move on. There is also a shorter list of candidates for Congress–Incumbent Jarred Huffman faces 4 challengers, including Republican Chris Coulombe–those two will likely meet up in the fall. Add in a race for the local seat in the California Assembly, non-partisan races for the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors, a choice for Superior court Judge, and two state propositions – if you vote in person, it may take some time
