Sonoma County is looking at a high price tag after the rainstorms earlier this month. Damage to the county’s roads and government buildings is estimated to cost 3.2 million dollars to repair. Last year’s winter storms, which prompted President Biden to declare a state of emergency for California, caused up to 17-million-dollars in damage in Sonoma County. This year, road damage, including washouts, accounts for three-million-dollars of the total. Most of the building damage comes from roof leaks.

There will be a larger presence of California Highway Patrol this weekend on Highway 20 in Lake county. In the wake of yet another pedestrian fatality along the road this week, CHP is bumping up patrols this Presidents Day weekend with a focus on pedestrian safety. They’ll also be looking out for impaired, distracted, and aggressive drivers. It’s already been the deadliest February on record, and county officials are trying to find ways to lower the number of accidents and traffic deaths. Officials will be meeting with Caltrans to come up with strategies to make Highway 20 safer. They’re looking at recent incidents to see what they have in common. The one thing they have found is that two of the latest deaths along highway 20 involved people crossing the road at night during bad weather with very little street lighting. Officials said Highway 20 has had a history of tragic incidents thanks to the large amount of bicycle and foot traffic.
There’s been such a buzz around the upcoming candidate forum at Potter Valley high school, that school officials had to move it to a bigger room. As students at the school learned about the candidates running for the District 1 seat on the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors, they decided to bring the candidates together for a question and answer session. They opened it up to the public, and it’s gotten such a great response school officials thought it would be best to move the forum from the library to the school’s gym. The small high school’s graduating class will have 14 students this year, and a couple of them will be old enough to vote by the March 5th Primary Election. The candidate forum will be held on Wednesday, February 21st at 6m. Get there by 5 to enjoy a fundraising dinner of chili and cornbread for $7.
