If you’re wondering where the least expensive place to live is in the state, you may want to consider moving to the north side of Clearlake. Two spots in Lake County landed on a list of the 25 places with the lowest cost of living in California. The list, from Niche dot com, has Upper Lake and Nice (Neese) at number 4 and number 21 respectively. The report combines several factors, from school report cards to US Census data and online reviews. Niche said the city of Upper Lake has a mix of suburban and rural neighborhoods, making it a cost effective choice for residents. According to the website, the median home value is around $275,000 thousand dollars, and the median rent is only $595.
The current Mayor of Fort Bragg has decided to run for a Mendocino County Supervisor seat. Bernie Norvell started campaigning for the 4th District seat after the current supervisor announced he wouldn’t be running for reelection. Voters will head to the polls on March 5th to pick new supervisors and decide other local races. Norvell said he plans to run for the County Board of Supervisors one day as part of his overall plan to serve the people of Mendocino County.
An arrest warrant has been issued for a man suspected in a Fort Bragg Shooting. Mendocino County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a shooting on January 13th near highway 20. They found a man who’d been shot in the leg after an argument about stolen property. The suspect, Michael Jones, has been on the run ever since. According to the Fort Bragg Advocate News, an order of arrest was issued for Jones that includes charges of attempted murder, felon in possession of a firearm, and parole violation. Police say Jones current location is still unknown. He’s described as a 33 year old white male, 5 foot 11, 175 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. Jones has a tattoo on the right side of his neck. Officials don’t know when Mill Creek Road will reopen in MacKerricher State Park. The road collapsed after being damaged by winter storms and king tides earlier this month. The damage has made vehicle access around Lake Cleone to Laguna Point impossible. At the moment, Mill Creek Road is closed from the West Pine campground to the Surfwood campground, and from the boardwalk to Laguna Point. Chief Park Ranger, Loren Rex, said they have no projected day for it to re-open. Parks dot CA dot Gov has a map of the current closed areas.
The Fort Bragg Rotary and Mendocino Coast Sports Foundation are hosting their annual drive-thru Crab Feed Fundraiser tomorrow. The event runs from 2 to 5pm behind the Fort Bragg Firehouse. Crab, locally made chowder, salad, dessert and more will be available, and you can schedule delivery for an extra ten dollars. Raffle tickets will be for sale, with proceeds benefiting the community. Keep your fur babies flea free. Volunteers will be at the Fort Bragg Food Bank on Friday, February 2nd giving free flea / tick repellant to dogs of low income residents. The event runs from 11am to 2pm. You can also pick up vet care assistance info, and get your pup a new leash, collar, or comfy new bed. Salty Paws will be handing out coupons for free nail clipping. It’s all part of the Second Chance Project which helps the pets of people in need.
Got Junk? Clearlake is hosting a free dump day next week. From 9am to 1pm on Wednesday you can offload all your trash, recycling, and compost at the Recycling Center on Davis Street. Free Dump Days are made possible by the Clean California grant program to help reduce illegal dumping and keep the city beautiful. Registration for Free Dump Day is not required, but it is appreciated. Clearlake residents can register at CleanClearlake.com/dump-days. When you get to the recycling center, you’ll need to show ID or mail to confirm your address.
