You can hear our First Lady speak today in Healdsburg. Dr. Jill Biden will land at Charles M Shulz – Sonoma County Airport this afternoon. She’s scheduled to appear at a private fundraising event in support of President Biden’s reelection campaign. Dr. Biden will be hosted at the home of the owners of Puma Springs Vineyards in Healdsburg. This visit marks the second time Dr. Biden has been to Sonoma County while campaigning for the President.
Police are releasing more info about the fight between two students at Montgomery High School on Tuesday. Investigators say the 14 year old suspect punch, kicked, and ripped out another 14 year old girl’s hair during a fight in a bathroom. The victim was severely injured in the fight. The suspect was arrested after school when police found her at home. She’s now facing felony charges.
A road known for bicycle crashes has claimed another victim. A woman from San Jose died Monday afternoon when her bicycle left the road and hit a downed tree on Hauser Bridge Road. First responders said she missed a turn while approaching the bend in the road at a high speed. This marks the 5th documented bike crash in the same spot since 2011, including another fatal crash in 2015.
A Santa Rosa bicyclist was stabbed, and now six teenagers are in jail. The suspects, all boys between 15 and 17 years old, were arrested Wednesday. They’re accused of stabbing a man in the Bellevue Ranch Neighborhood last Thursday. The man was stabbed multiple times, and his bicycle was stolen. Police say witnesses saw the attack and chased the boys away.
There’s still time to catch the latest exhibition at the Grace Hudson Museum. “Printed & Stitched: Examining the overlap between the hand pulled print and the art quilt” has been open since October and will close on March 15th. The exhibition explores textile and paper art and techniques from both printmaking and quilting. See everything on display at the Grace Hudson Museum, open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10am to 4:30pm. The museum is at 431 South Main Street in Ukiah. General admission is just 5 dollars. The museum is always free for members, Native Americans, and active military.
It’s almost time for the annual survey of homeless residents in Mendocino County. Volunteers are still being accepted to help out with the survey, which starts next week. The Point In Time Count is planned for January 24th, and volunteers will need to go through some training. The deadline to volunteer is Tuesday at 1pm. The USDA Forest Service is still looking for comments on the proposal to amend land management plans. The Forest Service said they’ve corrected the deadline to give residents more time to give feedback. The plan is considering amendments in 5 key areas. Those are wildfire resilience, climate change adaptation, tribal inclusion, sustainable communities, and conservation. Mendocino National Forest is among the forests included in the planning. There are a few webinars and virtual open houses you can attend to learn more, visit FS dot USDA dot GOV for the details. The deadline to submit formal comments is February 2nd.
Another local event has returned after the pandemic shut it down. For the first time since early 2020, there will be a public dance next Saturday at the Ukiah Methodist Church Social Hall. Being hosted by the Ukiah Contra Dance Group, these dances were held monthly for over 30 years. Contra Dance is an American Folk Dance that welcomes dancers of all ages. And don’t worry if you’ve never been, they’ll teach you every step. Just get there by 6:30 for a beginner’s class taught by Celia Ramsey. The dance will be held on Saturday the 27th a 7pm, with music from Bob Daley and Friends. No experience or partner needed, and masks are optional.
