Clearlake Police are searching for a missing woman named Brittany Spurling. The 29 year old was last seen in Lakeport on June 20. Brittany is white, and 5 feet 4 inches tall weighing around 130 pounds. She has blond hair and blue eyes. If you have any information on Brittany Spurling, please call Clearlake Police.
Another shaker hit the shore in Mendocino County on the 4th of July. A magnitude 3.9 quake jolted residents west of the North Coast just before 8am. On Monday, a 4.0 quake hit on the Mendocino fault west of Cape Mendocino, according to NBC Bay area news and KymKemp.
The City of Willits posted a temporary swimming pool closure today online. There was a failure in the pumping system. The city is working to fix the problem.
Lake County is getting one new CHP officer. Lake County News reports California has over 100 new CHP officers after their graduation ceremony at the Capital last week. CHP now has over 6,500 sworn officers in the state. Another new class of 128 cadets are expected to join classes at the CHP academy bringing the number of new men and women to the highway patrol to 366. That will bring in the highest number of cadets to train in over a decade. The training takes about half a year before officers can officially report to stations across California. The office would like to hire 1,000 new officers after they began the “Join the CHP 1,000” campaign.
A man near Willits was bit several times by a rattlesnake on Saturday, according to reports in KymKemp. CalFire Howard Forest was called by a man just before 10pm, who had been bitten and tried to drive himself to a nearby hospital, when he couldn’t continue and stopped in front of the Little Lake Willits Fire Department. Medical personnel got there and took him to get medical attention Officials say symptoms of rattle snake venom includes extreme pain and swelling at the bite location, excessive bleeding, nausea, swelling in the mouth and throat, trouble breathing collapse and even shock. UC Davis urges washing the wound with soap and removing watches rings and other jewelry near the bite.
The summer heat in Norcal is helping snowmelt mosquitoes. KCRA reports the record snowfall’s melt surged over the weekend pushing the mosquitoes out of hibernation. A Mosquito and Vector Control District manager says if things stay over 100 this month, we’ll get even more of the pest, basically going from zero to one hundred. The population density depends on location, elevation and snowmelt conditions.
A suspect accused of assaulting people in Healdsburg was found dead in a parking lot Monday morning. Healdsburg Police were sent to a lot on Matheson Street after 10am, where with medical personnel where they pronounced him dead. Sonoma County officials have yet to id the man. In a Nixle alert around 11am police closed off the area where they found him. Police reported getting calls on the man who apparently assaulted people downtown and was threatening more with a hammer. Authorities learned he had been fighting with a group of people before he was found. The Press Democrat reports an autopsy will be performed to help find out how the man died. Anyone with information about the man in Healdsburg is asked to call police.
In a case first reported on Monday, we have more information on a fugitive from Washington. Willis Police have issued a release about a homeless man who was assaulted while sleeping last Thursday morning. Willits Police discovered Charles Nutter was a suspect, with a heads up from Spokane Police that he was wanted for stabbing a homeless man there on June 6th. Fort Bragg Police arrested Nutter Friday night, and took him to the Mendocino County jail as he waits to be extradited back to Washington.
There was an accident after a vehicle rolled off of Highway 20 near mile marker 27. An air ambulance was called to help a trapped person get out of the crash 300 feet down an embankment west of Willits. The dog, that may have fallen out of the rolling vehicle and is still missing. Her name is Gracie, and older dog with a heart condition. She is a 40 pound dog, micro-chipped and wearing a black harness with tags. She appears to be a border collier Australian shepherd mix. The Clearlake City Council will meet Thursday for a budget workshop and regular meeting at Clearlake City Hall. The annual financial report and audit will be presented for the fiscal year 2021-2022, according to Lake County News. The council will discuss benefits plans and consider a 3 percent cost of living increase for city workers. Other items on the agenda include a bid award for the City Hall Remodel Project of over $1.2 million. The council will discuss authorizing a side letter with the Clearlake Police Officer Association and the Clearlake Middle Management Association.
Lake County is receiving $2.4 million as part of infrastructure funds from the California Transportation Commission. The commission approved about $2 billion last week to improve infrastructure and also approved $2.3 billion in future work. Lake County News reports the Lake County funds will support roadway and guardrail upgrades, left-turn lanes, lighting, pedestrian lights and curb ramps on Route 29 near Middletown. An additional $2.7 million has been earmarked for emergency work on embankment repairs and drainage work on Route 175 near Lakeport. Another nearly $2 million will fund roadway, drainage repairs and more on US 101 in Humboldt, Mendocino and Lake Counties. More projects are slated along Route 1 in Mendocino County at Navarro Ridge Road. Local projects of around $6 million will go to fund Ukiah Urban Core Rehabilitation and Transportation Project.
Monday’s temperatures marked the hottest day on the planet according to the Press Democrat. Earth’s average temperature rose to nearly 63 degrees for the first time in history. In a report by the University of Maine with information from NOAA, July 3rd beat the previous temperature by just a few tenths of 62.4 about a year ago. Researchers say climate change and El Nino may have contributed to Monday’s heat. And scientists say this summer could get even hotter. Locally, Sonoma County and inland areas were about 20 degrees cooler than normal.
California’s State Assembly got a new speaker Friday. Assemblyman Robert Rivas was sworn in as the first legislator from a rural district to hold that office in modern history, according to the AP. The Democrat representing the Central Coast is replacing Speaker Anthony Rendon who terms out at the end of next year after serving in the lower house as leader for the last 7 years. At the Capital Fri day he said priorities include housing and homelessness, he hopes to improve public services and infrastructure while fighting climate change. The position change was bumpy as former Speaker Rendon fought to stay in power. Rivas was chair of the Assembly Agriculture Committee prior to the new position.
A controlled burn is planned for this weekend in Lakeport. Lake County News reports the Lakeport Fire Protection District will work on the prescribed burn from 8am Saturday through noon. The blaze is set for land near Larrecou Lane and Lakeport Blvd. Residents will see smoke during the burn, and are asked to stay away to let firefighters do their work.
Voting begins for Women in Cannabis at the California State Fair Cannabis Awards to on July 23rd. The Women, Weed and Wellness categories include California Educator of the Year, Thought Mother of the Year and Legacy Woman of the Year. The group Club Kindness joined with the state fair to spotlight women in the cannabis industry, who educate, influence and advance plant medicine. They are showcased on the voting portal page. The Round Valley Tribal community is hoping a skate board legend will help bring in funds for a skate park. The town of Covelo is hoping Tony Hawk will visit to publicize the creation of the skate park project. Hawk founded The Skatepark Project over 2 decades ago for guidance and grants in low-income communities to build safe public skate parks. His non-profit has helped well over 600 skate parks in the nation with over $11 million in grants. The Press Democrat reports young people have been dying in the community, with a teen girl who was murdered earlier this y ear. The tribal community hopes a skate park will help people come together, after seeing positive results with their portable ramps and boards monthly at a recreation center. They’re hoping to have a competition including Hawk to raise money for the project.
