A Proposed Update By Fema To Flood Maps In Mendocino County And Ukiah Could Increase Insurance Requirements For Residents. Fema’s Proposed Updates Substantially Expand Existing Floodplains And Include Revisions Of Flood Hazards Along Gibson Creek, Doolin Creek, Orrs Creek And Other Tributaries. The City’s Engineering Staff Disagree With The Revised Flood Maps And Have Contracted An Engineering Firm To Take A Closer Look And Either Corroborate Or Deny Fema’s Findings.

Caltrans Has Recently Allocated More Than $988 Million To Repair And Improve Infrastructure Throughout The State. $450 Million Comes From The Federal Infrastructure Investment And Jobs Act Of 2021 With Another $250 Million Coming From Senate Bill 1, The Road Repair And Accountability Act Of 2017. Locally, 34 Million Will Go Toward Median And Culvert Repairs And Other Improvements Near Willits. About 3.1 Million Has Been Allocated To Remove Trees Along Several Highways That Pose A Hazard At Locations In Mendocino, Lake And Humboldt Counties. An Additional 20.9 Million Will Be Spent On Guardrail And Other Improvements Along Route 20 In Lake County.

California’s Presidential Primary Has Been Announced For March 5th Of 2024, Which Coincides With The Election Of Fourth District Supervisor. Potential Candidates Will Only Have About Nine Months Before Papers Have To Be Filed…the Deadline Is September Of This Year. Gjerde Said He Wanted To Announce That He Will Not Being Seeking A Fourth Term Now So That Residents Interested In Pursuing The Position Will Have Time To Study The Issues.

Residents Are Asked To Report Any Damage Sustained During The Severe Storms In December And January To Help Them Have Accurate Data For Requests For Assistance. The County Is Transitioning From Disaster Response To The Recovery Phase And Will Use The Information Collected To Request Help From State And Federal Agencies And Non-Profit Organizations. California State Parks Is Giving Residents Three New Ways To Enjoy The State’s Natural Beauty For Free. All California Residents Are Eligible To Check Out A California Parks Library Pass. You’ll Need A Library Card Which Will Give You Access To More Than 200 State Park Units. Students In The Fourth Grade Can Enjoy 19 Select Parks For Free During The Full School Year With The California State Parks Adventure Pass. And Families Receiving Calworks And Income-Eligible Residents Who Are 62 And Older Can Apply For A Golden Bear Pass. Applications Are Available Online And The Pass Offers Access To More Than 200 State Park Units.

Family Members Looked On Friday Morning As The Husband And Father Of Two Victims Of A Drunk Driver Gave A Tearful Impact Statement At A Sentencing Hearing. In August Of 2022 A Young Mother Who Was Crossing A Street In Ukiah With Her One-Year Old In A Stroller Was Struck By The Speeding Driver And Thrown In The Air By The Impact. Fortunately, The Baby Fell Out Of The Stroller Prior To It Being Dragged Down The Street By The Car. The Child Only Received Minor Injuries, But The Mother’s Injuries Were Life-Threatening And Required Several Surgeries And She’s Still Facing Long-Term Rehabilitation And Medical Care Needs. Mendofever Reports That The Defendant, 32-Year Old, German Dominguez Galindo Of Ukiah Was Sentenced To Eight Years For Driving A Motor Vehicle Under The Influence Of Alcohol And/Or Drugs.

For The Past Year, Mendocino County Has Been Working To Create A New Wildlife Exclusion Program And Raise Public Awareness About The Resources Available To Help Residents With Their Wildlife Needs. The Mendocino Voice Reports That The County Is Collecting Information On Local Wildlife Issues And Needs To Create The Program Which Will Be Based On Non-Lethal Measures. The Dept Of Agriculture Weights And Measures Reports About 53 Calls So Far To Their Phone Lines, With Only One Related To A Wildlife Nuisance. They Are Working To Get The Word Out To The Public That They Can Reach Out To Numerous Agencies For Help Including Awm Which Can Help With Small Wildlife Nuisance Issues. The California Dept Of Fish And Wildlife Handles Large Wildlife Situations And Issues With Domestic Animals Are Handled By The Dept. Of Animal Care Services. Mendocino County’s New Program Is Taking Cues From Similar Wildlife Exclusion Programs In Sonoma And Marin Counties. Local Agencies Will Give An Update To The Board In Six Months.
